It could be said that while I and my family weren't born with a silver spoon in our mouths nor were we an exception to the old quote by the late consumer advocate Marvin Zindler, "It's hell to be poor," the years that we were born were full of important and even unforgettable moments and events that had a huge impact on human history and indeed global history too.
For instance, in the year that my mother was born, on November 29, 1948, Israel became a nation, the Nuremberg Trials were going on in post-World War II Germany, President Harry S. Truman was re-elected to a second term in office, and one of the first events of the Cold War, known as the Berlin Airlift, began in earnest.
In the year that my father was born, on January 23, 1949, the Chinese Communists under Mao Zedong defeated the Chinese Nationalists under Chiang Kai-Shek and established the People's Republic Of China, which is the sole Communist superpower in the world today, the Soviet Union tested its first nuclear bomb, triggering the Cold War which raged on for the next 50 years, the United States and Europe formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, known as NATO today, and the Soviet Union formed the Warsaw Pact in direct response.
In the year that my elder sister was born, on August 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the controversial case known as Roe Vs. Wade, which has become a license for the extermination of millions of unborn children, the Watergate scandal broke out, which would culminate in the resignation of President Richard Milhouse Nixon, and the Yom Kippur War broke out between Israel and its Arab rivals.
In the year that my youngest sister was born, on February 3, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington State, killing approximately 57 people, Ronald Reagan was elected the 40th President of the United States, the Iran-Iraq War began, and the Iranian hostage crisis was beginning to wind down.
In the year that I myself was born, on July 12, 1986, the Cold War began to start thawing off, the Mir space station was launched by the former Soviet Union, the U.S. space shuttle Challenger exploded only seconds after launch, killing all seven astronauts aboard and temporarily suspending shuttle missions, the first nonstop, non-refueled airplane flight around the world took place on the plane known as Voyager, and Halley's Comet made another flyby near Earth, having last been seen in 1910.
In the year that my elder nephew was born, on March 25, 1998, President Bill Clinton barely escaped impeachment from office and the Kosovo War began.
In the year that my niece was born, on April 23, 2001, George Walker Bush, son of the former president and one-time vice president of President Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, was elected the 43rd President of the United States, the worst terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, known as the 9/11 attacks, were launched by al-Qaeda terrorists, killing approximately 3,000 people, resulting in the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City and extensive damage to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., one of the worst scandals in the history of corporate America, the Enron scandal, broke out, and the infamous Bernie Madoff was tried and convicted for insider trading, wire fraud, and tax fraud.
In the year that my younger nephew was born, on September 6, 2002, Arthur Anderson, an accounting firm based in Houston, Texas, was found out to have destroyed subpoenaed accounting records related to the fallen Houston-based energy giant, Enron, which resulted in the conviction of the top Enron accountant David Duncan, on a charge of obstruction of justice.
So, as you can clearly see, friends, the years that I and my family were born were eventful years indeed.
